Inman Family Chiropractic Blog

Join us on July 4th from 10-12

We will be having an open house on July 4th from 10-12. Dr Wills will be on hand to answer questions about chiropractic and to do free consultations. We will also have some cold beverages and snacks on hand. Feel free to stop in and get out of the heat, say hi and have a cold drink. We will also be having a drawing for a free 30 min massage, free adjustment and x-rays and other stuff. We look forward to seeing you and hope everyone has a happy and safe 4th of July.

Also on Friday July 10th we will be closed. We will also be closed on Thursday July 16th. Dr. Wills will be volunteering at the Inman Farmers Market so make sure you stop down and see him. Buy some great local produce and help support our local farmers.

The Benefits of a Gonstead Adjustment

In my previous post I told you that there are many different styles that
chiropractors use to adjust their patients. I also told you a little bit
about the method I use -- the Gonstead System.

But now I want to explain why I chose to practice this method and why I
think it provides the most benefit to my patients.

Foundation (Hips and Lower Back)
Gonstead is based on the principles of physics -- more specifically
foundation. For example, during construction of a new building, the
foundation is essential if the building is to last and stay safe. And any
change in the foundation of a building can have drastic effects on its
other parts. The same principal is true for your body. And Gonstead basis
its practices on this idea. The foundation of your body is the pelvic
girdle (hips and lower back). If the hips or lower back (or any other bones
in your spine) become tilted or rotate out of position, just like with the
foundation of the building, it can have drastic effects on the rest of your
body.

Subluxations in Your Body's Foundation
Other chiropractic systems can easily identify misalignments (subluxations)
in the upper parts of your body. However, just like in the building
example, when a subluxation occurs somewhere in the lower part of the body,
the body attempts to correct the problem and continue to keep the body
upright by creating subluxations above it. So if I were just to adjust the
subluxation in the upper part of the body and ignore the one in the lower
part, I would be missing the true problem. Now you can see where the
additional analysis, study, and practice performed by a Gonstead
chiropractor become important, especially when you consider that every body
presents a different set of subluxations--no two people are the same!

Lasting Results
The Gonstead System is proven to provide lasting results because it gets to
the root cause of spinal subluxations. Missing this results in only limited
and short-term relief. However, by identifying all of the subluxations and
creating a plan to effectively treat them, your spine is better able to
return to its normal position. And most importantly, you experience
complete and lasting results.

Dr. Gonstead's Advice
Finally, Dr. Gonstead provided the following advice to chiropractor's
practicing the Gonstead System. It successfully summarizes what I am
attempting to do at Inman Family Chiropractic.

"Find the subluxation, accept it where you find it, correct it, and leave
it alone." -- C.S. Gonstead

Ever wonder why different chiropractors practice different ways?

Many people are surprised to learn that there are numerous methods, styles,
etc. that chiropractors used to adjust their patients.

At Inman Family Chiropractic, we primarily use the Gonstead system, as we
believe it provides the quickest and most lasting results.

Here are a few facts about the Gonstead method that we think you will find
useful!

The Gonstead system was developed by Clarence S. Gonstead over 55 years and
4 million adjustments. Before becoming a chiropractor, Dr. Gonstead was an
automotive engineer!

Gonstead saw chiropractic as more than just bone setting. Instead, he
created this system by approaching it with a true scientific method --
using the biomechanical principals of physics. Because of this, performing
Gonstead-specific adjustments takes additional study and practice.

A major difference that you might notice between a Gonstead chiropractor
and others is in the spinal assessment. My spinal assessments are a series
of five steps that I use to make sure I provide the most accurate
adjustment possible. These five steps include:

Visualization--I visually look for even subtle changes in your movement
and posture.
Instrumentation--I run a Nervoscope down your spine. The Nervoscope
detects uneven distributions in heat, which are indicators of
inflammation and nerve pressure.
Static Palpation--I feel your spine while you remain in a stationary
position. I am looking for swelling, tenderness, or other abnormal
tightness or textures.
Motion Palpation--I feel your spine while I move or bend it at different
angles. This helps me to determine how easily your body is moving.
X-Ray Analysis--I take and analyze x-rays of your spine. This allows me
to see your entire spine and any misalignments you might have.

This extra analysis and work come together to provide additional benefit to
the patient in the end because I can get to the true source of your spinal
problems. For example, if a lower portion of the spine is misaligned, I am
able to zone in on and adjust the specific misalignment, which could be in
both the lower and upper areas of your spine.
