Better Sleep: Choosing the Correct Mattress for You

Humans need sleep. In fact, we spend a third of our lives in bed! And
getting an adequate amount of good quality sleep can help:

Increase overall health
Boost immune functions
Burn fat
Boost memory and mental functions
Repair tissue
Increase your life span

This makes the decision of which mattress to purchase a pretty important
one! As a chiropractor, I am dedicated to improving the health of your
spine. And choosing the correct mattress for you is an important part of
maintaining your spinal health. In fact, the better your mattress, the less
you'll need to see me!

Some signs that your mattress is not right for you include:

Tossing and turning throughout the night
Feeling tired and fatigued in the morning rather than refreshed
Waking up with pain or stiffness, especially in the lower back

So what type of mattress should you choose? It is really a matter of
personal preference. Every BODY is different and because of this has
different needs in terms of support and comfort. What is comfortable for me
and good for my back, might be completely wrong for my brother and even
worse for my sister. But it also boils down to posture. Just as obtaining
the correct posture while your are upright is key to proper spinal health,
finding a mattress that creates good posture while you are lying down
(sleeping) is extremely important. This means that when you are laying on
your new mattress, you want your ear, shoulder, hip, and ankle in a
straight line (if someone were to look at you from the side).

Consumer Search provides an excellent article, mattress reviews, and
additional resources regarding the many options in mattresses available
today including:

Innerspring
Memory Foam
Latex
Air

But they agree, it really comes down to the particular body lying on the
mattress. They also provide excellent advice: to find the correct mattress,
you need to go to the store and "test" mattresses until you find the
perfect fit for you. And finally, make sure to get a 30-90 day warranty in
case after purchaing the mattress, you realize it is the wrong fit!
